Sustainability Development Goals

Creating and sharing teaching materials openly sits naturally alongside Durham’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Open resources extend access to quality education beyond the enrolled student body, contributing to the broader ambition of SDG 4 — Quality Education. Materials that can be freely adapted allow educators in under-resourced contexts to build on existing work rather than starting from scratch – a small but meaningful contribution to reducing educational inequality. And when institutions share rather than duplicate, they model the kind of cross-sector collaboration that SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals calls for.

There is also a quieter connection to how we work. Reusing and adapting what already exists, rather than creating everything from scratch, reflects the responsible approach to consumption and production that runs through SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production. Sharing what you’ve made costs little and reaches far.
